Automate data classification by integrating MineOS with PostgreSQL
How It Works
MineOS connects to your PostgreSQL server and scans all the databases and tables the connected user has access to, analyzing rows and columns to classify the personal data they contain. Scan results appear under Data Classifier, and the data types found are associated with the PostgreSQL data source.
Note: This article covers data classification. Setting up PostgreSQL for privacy requests is covered in the PostgreSQL DSR integration article.
Before You Start
- Have the details needed to connect to your database ready: hostname or IP, database name and user credentials.
- MineOS must be able to reach your database. Whitelist the MineOS IPs in your database or firewall (IP & Email Whitelisting), or, if the database is on a private network, connect through a VPN tunnel.
- [Optional] Enable Preview mode to view sample PII values alongside classification results. You must enable Preview mode before running the scan.
Setting Up
Step 1: Grant permissions to the MineOS user
Grant the PostgreSQL user SELECT on the tables you want to scan. MineOS scans every database and table the user has access to, so you can grant access to all tables or only some.
Step 2: Connect in MineOS
- Log in to MineOS. On the left sidebar, click Inventory → Data Sources. Click Add Data Source, search for PostgreSQL and click Add.
- Open the PostgreSQL data source → Integrations tab → Request Handling section → select Integration.
- Enter your database connection string, for example:
Host=your-server-ip;Database=your-database;Username=your-user;Password=your-password; - Mark the Scan this source using Data Classifier checkbox.
- Click Test & Save.
You're done! MineOS has been connected to your PostgreSQL database.
Note: If you connect to an internal database through the MineOS VPN tunnel, add the database's IP as a route on the VPN settings page.
