Automate data classification by integrating MineOS with Microsoft SQL Server
How It Works
MineOS connects to your SQL Server database with a dedicated user, scans your tables and classifies the personal data in each row. The results are added to the data types of the SQL Server data source.
Note: This article covers data classification. Setting up SQL Server for privacy requests is covered in the Microsoft SQL Server DSR integration article.
Before You Start
- The integration supports SQL Server 2019 and later.
- Have the details needed to connect to your database ready: server IP, port, database name and the credentials of the user you create below.
- MineOS must be able to reach your database. Whitelist the MineOS IPs in your database or firewall (IP & Email Whitelisting), or, if the database is on a private network, connect through a VPN tunnel.
- [Optional] Enable Preview mode to view sample PII values alongside classification results. You must enable Preview mode before running the scan.
Setting Up
Step 1: Create a user for MineOS
Create a new database user and grant it:
- SELECT on the databases and tables you want to scan. You can use the
db_datareaderrole on the database, which allows read access to all tables and views in it. - VIEW DEFINITION on system tables, which lets MineOS view the metadata of system objects such as tables, schemas and indexes.
MineOS can only scan the tables this user has access to.
Step 2: Connect in MineOS
- Log in to MineOS. On the left sidebar, click Inventory → Data Sources. Click Add Data Source, search for Microsoft SQL Server and click Add.
- Open the data source → Integrations tab → Request Handling section → select Integration.
- Enter your database connection string, including the user ID, password, server IP, port and database name.
- Mark the Scan this source using Data Classifier checkbox.
- Click Test & Save.
You're done! MineOS has been connected to your SQL Server database.
