Automate data classification by integrating MineOS with MySQL

How It Works

MineOS connects to your MySQL database with a dedicated user, scans your tables and classifies the personal data in each row. The results are added to the data types of the MySQL data source.

Note: This article covers data classification. Setting up MySQL for privacy requests is covered in the MySQL DSR integration article.

Before You Start

  • The integration supports MySQL Server 8.0 and later.
  • Have the details needed to connect to your database ready: server IP, port, database name and the credentials of the user you create below.
  • MineOS must be able to reach your database. Whitelist the MineOS IPs in your database or firewall (IP & Email Whitelisting), or, if the database is on a private network, connect through a VPN tunnel.
  • [Optional] Enable Preview mode to view sample PII values alongside classification results. You must enable Preview mode before running the scan.

Setting Up

Step 1: Create a user for MineOS

Create a new database user and grant it SELECT on the databases and tables you want to scan. MineOS can only scan the tables this user has access to.

Step 2: Connect in MineOS

  1. Log in to MineOS. On the left sidebar, click Inventory → Data Sources. Click Add Data Source, search for MySQL and click Add.
  2. Open the MySQL data source → Integrations tab → Request Handling section → select Integration.
  3. Enter your database connection string, for example:
    Data Source=your-server-ip;Port=3306;Database=your-database;User ID=your-user;Password=your-password;
  4. [Optional] To authenticate with a client certificate, paste its details in the certificate fields.
  5. Mark the Scan this source using Data Classifier checkbox.
  6. Click Test & Save.

You're done! MineOS has been connected to your MySQL database.
