Automate data classification by integrating MineOS with Microsoft SharePoint

How It Works

MineOS scans all sites in your SharePoint account and the files in their drives to detect the personal data stored in them. It supports all major file formats, including text files, documents and images.

Note: This article covers data classification. Setting up SharePoint for privacy requests is covered in the Microsoft SharePoint DSR integration article.

SharePoint and OneDrive

The SharePoint (Tenant) integration covers your company's shared sites only. Each employee's OneDrive is a private SharePoint site, so to scan both shared and personal sites, connect both the SharePoint (Tenant) and OneDrive (Tenant) integrations.

Choose the right connection type

  • Microsoft SharePoint (Tenant): recommended. An app-mode integration: you grant MineOS app-level access to your tenant, so it can scan all shared sites.
  • Microsoft SharePoint: a legacy integration on the path to deprecation. If you use it, switch to SharePoint (Tenant).

Before You Start

  • You need a SharePoint account with administrator permissions. Connect as an admin so you can grant full consent yourself, rather than requesting consent from another user.
  • [Optional] Enable Preview mode to view sample PII values alongside classification results. You must enable Preview mode before running the scan.

Setting Up

  1. Log in to MineOS. On the left sidebar, click Inventory → Data Sources. Click Add Data Source, search for SharePoint and click Add.
  2. Open the data source → Integrations tab → Request Handling section → select Integration, and choose Microsoft SharePoint (Tenant).
  3. Click Connect and follow the on-screen instructions to grant MineOS the required permissions.
  4. Select Consent on behalf of your organization. This often creates a request for your admin to review; the connection is made once they approve it.
  5. When you're redirected back to MineOS, a message confirms whether the connection succeeded.
  6. Mark the Scan this source using Data Classifier checkbox and click Save.

You're done! MineOS has been connected to your SharePoint.

Note: If you don't have the Consent on behalf of your organization checkbox, or don't select it, MineOS will have limited permissions and won't be able to scan all content.
